Business alliance forging a strong identity with Shop LO Bags

by: CLIFF NEWELL - Carol Winston and John Hanan display the shopping bags they hope will help increase shopping in downtown Lake Oswego and Lake Grove.Lake Oswego already has lots of great businesses. Now it has a shopping bag worthy of them.

The Lake Oswego Business Alliance has launched its Shop LO Bags program with a simple, strong message: Shop in Lake Oswego.

Local businesses need strong messages in this era when so many people use the Internet to do their shopping, and Carol Winston thinks her organization has come up with a fine idea. This not your everyday reusable shopping bag for using at the grocery. Winston said the two best things about the bag are the logo designed by John Hanan and the slogan: “An Adventure Around Every Corner.”

“The logo will leave our brand image in the community,” said Winston. “We want to present it until the community realizes what the Lake Oswego Business Alliance is all about.”

“We have to present our message over and over again,” Hanan said. “Statistics say you’ve got to do it at least 15 times before it sticks.”

Having Shop LO Bags as a LOBA project was a long process for committee members Winston, Hanan and Bob Martinsson, owner of Glance Optics.

“We want to create awareness in Lake Oswego of the diversity of our retail shops,” Martinsson said. “A vibrant retail shopping scene is available here.”

“We wanted to bring attention to what we offer in downtown Lake Oswego,” said Hanan, owner of JH2 Design Inc. “The slogan seemed natural.”

“This project would never have happened without John and Bob,” said Winston, owner of Accessories From the Heart.

Winston is hoping the bags will put a dent in the trend of online shopping and bring back business to the merchants who are the lifeblood of a community.

“My business has always been about building relationships,” said Winston. “It’s hard to build a relationship with a computer screen.”

“If people give us a chance, I think we have about everything you want,” Hanan said.

Besides their primary target, Martinsson said, “We also want to increase awareness outside of Lake Oswego.”

The shopping bags will be available at 20 businesses associated with LOBA.

This is the second promotion of LOBA. Its first was the highly successful wine walk last November. The organization has built strong support in its short existence, with 45 business owners regularly attending meetings.

“We’re trying hard to help each other,” Winston said. “The only way we can do that is by supporting each other’s businesses. I tell our members that the better we know each other the better it will be for the Lake Oswego business community.”
