A thing of beauty awaits them when the court is officially opened on June 14. Cydny Fletcher, teen and youth program coordinator for the City of Lake Oswego, and the members of the Youth Action Council have created a new kind of hopscotch court, one that can intrigue both the mind and the feet.

“When we got the call about doing a hopscotch court, we came out to look at the site,” Fletcher said. “We asked if we could take some creative liberties. This is both a hopscotch court and an activity path. This court is for all ages. We’ve already had our Teen Lounge kids test it out and they got a big kick out of it.”

Fletcher and her crew did a lot of research about hopscotch courts, but they ended up doing their own thing.

“It goes with the flow of the park,” Fletcher said. “It’s right next to the sand box, and on the other side is the painted twister. We’ve completely removed all the previous features.

“It’s amazing how much this area has changed. Three weeks ago, it was a pile of gravel.”

The whole new fun area will have its grand opening on June 14 from 10 a.m. to noon. The celebration will include hotdogs, ice cream and bubbles.

YAC members coming in for special credit for their effort on the court are Lakeridge High School students Elizabeth Hill and Jini Stupak. Building the new hopscotch court is just one of many YAC projects, but it is quite a special one.

Fletcher said, “They like the idea that they can come to the park and say, ‘Hey, I made that!’”
