Report: Speed was primary factor in fatal accident

Alcohol, drugs weren't to blame

Speed was the primary factor in the crash on Petes Mountain Road that resulted in the deaths of two West Linn teens June 8, according to a report filed by the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office.

Hayden Soyk, 18, and Maddi Higgins, 17, were driving June 8 when their vehicle struck a power pole on SW Petes Mountain Road at 5:17 p.m.

Crews worked for several hours to extricate Soyk and Higgins from the vehicle.

Soyk, who was the driver, died at the scene. Higgins, who took longer to get out due to significant damage to the vehicle, was taken via Life Flight helicopter to a Portland hospital. She was taken off life support late in the evening of June 9.

According to the accident report filed by the sheriff’s office, “it appeared Soyk was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed when he lost control.” Responding officers found no signs of alcohol consumption and determined Soyk was not impaired in any way.
