City notes

PLANNING COMMISSION — The Lake Oswego Planning Commission will meet Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chamber, 380 A Ave. The commission will conduct a study session of the Healthy Ecosystems chapter of the Comprehensive Plan, which focuses on goals and policies related to the city's natural resources in conjunction with the sensitive lands program. The commission will integrate direction from the City Council's June 10 sensitive lands study session.

STAR SPANGLED CELEBRATION — On Thursday, July 3, the Millenium Concert Band will hold a patriotic concert starting at 7 p.m. The performance will be USO-style and will honor guest veterans, with the Lake Oswego Police Honor Guard making a ceremonial presentation of colors.

STAR SPANGLED PARADE AND CELEBRATION — The annual parade will begin at 10 a.m. from Lake Garden Court, with all of A Avenue closed for pedestrian viewing on both sides of the street. The parade route will end at Millenium Plaza Park, with a performance by the Fife & Drum Band and live music by the Dixieland Jazz Band, as well as a Presentation of Colors. There'll be face painting and balloon animals, too.

TOUR LAKE OSWEGO’S INDUSTRIAL PAST — The first of four walking tours of Lake Oswego’s industrial past will be led by Susanna Campbell Kuo on Saturday from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Kuo, a member of the Lake Oswego Preservation Society’s advisory board, has collaborated on two books on Lake Oswego history, curated several exhibits of local history and has written more than 30 interpretive signs for historic sites in Lake Oswego. This tour is offered by the preservation society in partnership with the City of Lake Oswego Parks & Recreation Department. The charge is $10 for residents and $15 for non-residents. CITY TO AWARD FIVE CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTS — Lake Oswego’s engineering department is advertising for construction bids on the Ash Street culvert replacement, Westlake repaving, miscellaneous pavement preservation and patching projects, the Cervantes water line replacement and the Lake Bay Court sewer line replacement. The city expects to award these contracts by July 29.

CONSTRUCTION ON IRON MOUNTAIN BOULEVARD — Due to pipeline construction, Iron Mountain Boulevard will be closed between Pine Valley Road and Summit Drive through July. Closures are in effect Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Residents and members of the country club can be flagged through only at the Pine Valley side of the closure.

IRON MOUNTAIN RESTORATION PLAN — A complete plan for the long-range restoration of the plant life at Iron Mountain Park has been completed, with input from the city and Friends of Iron Mountain Park. The plan can be viewed at ci.oswego.or.us/parksrec/restoration-managment-plans.

CLICK IT OR TICKET — The national seat belt safety enforcement campaign began May 19, with Oregon State Police and local law enforcement agencies amping up efforts to increase compliance. Although a survey from June 2013 found that 98 percent of Oregon drivers and passengers were using safety belts, a troubling 61 of 198 occupant fatalities in 2012 were caused because of a failure to use safety restraints.
