Torch making its way to Special Olympics Summer Games

More than 2,000 athletes expected to participate in Newberg this weekend

Runners from the Lake Oswego, Milwaukie and West Linn police departments and the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office accompanied Special Olympics athletes Tuesday on the Clackamas County leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run.

The group started on Main Street in Milwaukie and passed through Oregon City and West Linn before arriving at the Starbucks on State Street in the middle of a hot afternoon. The torch heads next to Washington and Multnomah counties before arriving in the Newberg High School stadium Saturday on the first day of the Special Olympics Summer State Games.

More than 2,000 athletes are expected to compete in the Games, which serve as Oregon's state championships in track & field, bocce, golf and softball. Participants trained in their hometowns for eight weeks prior to the Summer Games and qualified at regional competitions.

At the state Games:

• Track & field athletes will compete in the Newberg High School stadium from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

• Bocce players will face off at George Fox University’s Austin Sports Complex from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

• Skills and 18-hole golfers will tee off at the Chehalem Glenn Golf Course in Newberg from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; nine-hole golfers will play from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

• Softball players will take the field at Newberg High and the Darnell Wright Softball Complex in Newberg from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The public is invited to cheer on the athletes at all of the events and to welcome the final torch runners, who will enter Newberg High School’s stadium for a special Games Ceremony at 7 p.m. Saturday. Many of the runners who participated in the Law Enforcement Torch Run will be in the stadium for what is always an emotional tribute to the athletes.
