LOCAL will vet mayoral, council candidates

Thank you to all of you who made it the Lake Oswego Citizens Action League (LOCAL) kick-off meeting on June 27. The attendance, participation and interest was astounding and exceeded our expectations for a new organization. While we know that many of you were disappointed that Mary Olson is not running in November's election, her involvement in LOCAL ensures that she will still be a guiding voice in Lake Oswego and a champion for our town.

It was obvious to us that the citizens in Lake Oswego are looking for a new direction for our city government and want to be involved. We heard that you embrace LOCAL's core values:

* Prioritize local needs

* Restore fiscal responsibility

* Refocus on basic city services

* Preserve local community character

* Respect all citizens and their rights

There was a great deal of positive energy and enthusiasm for our mission to restore responsive city government that is focused on what's best for our town rather than implementing the regional agenda that sacrifices the unique character and economic health of our city. We appreciated that you share our interest for a non-partisan approach that embraces the fact that we are all neighbors; we are all Lake Oswego citizens who cherish our way of life and will not be divided by our political beliefs.

Our focus in the next months will be to inform citizens about local issues. We will vet mayoral and council candidates, so that we may endorse those candidates who support LOCAL core values.

For those of you who attended the meeting and offered to help, we'll be in touch soon. For those of you who couldn't attend the kickoff but want to participate, please be sure to add your name to our email list (upper right corner of our website) and let us know how you'd like to be involved. And, if you haven't heard of LOCAL yet, please visit our website at LOCitizens.com and find out how you can get involved in ensuring a new direction for Lake Oswego that focuses on our town.

Tana Haynes, of Lake Oswego, is a director-member of the Lake Oswego Citizens Action League.
