A message from your school board chairman

I am seeking re-election to Lake Oswego School Board, Director Position 3, to continue the important work essential to all of our children and community. During the past four years, I have had the wonderful opportunity to help shape district policy that has maintained excellence in education in all of our Lake Oswego schools. John Wendland

Our students excel in large part because of the conditions we are able to provide with an outstanding professional staff, engaged parents and a supportive community. I knew four years ago that schools in our state were facing financial challenges not seen since implementation of Measure 5. People asked me why I would want to get involved during one of the district’s toughest periods. Hard decisions would have to be made and change was inevitable. I care deeply about this community and our children and wanted to be part of the solutions.

Along with my colleagues, we have reconfigured our district to cut infrastructure costs and overhead so precious dollars can be spent for teachers and programs. As school board chair the past two years, I have helped lead our district through elementary school closings, reconfiguring our junior high model and balancing high school academic offerings. I have also supported prudent financial management to focus our resources on teachers and low class size ratios while retaining a broad selection of academic and program offerings.

Our strategic planning is working. We have made the hard decisions required for the benefit of all of our children. Compared to surrounding districts, we are in better financial shape and better positioned to deal with limited state resources.

There is still very important work to be done. Hiring a new superintendent to lead the district, closing the financial gap for future sustainability, determining a workable configuration of district facilities for the long term, transitioning to Common Core standards, and working hard to get the Local Option passed are all top priorities.

I ask for your support in re-electing me to school board position 3 in May’s election.

One of my strongest passions is supporting Lake Oswego schools. I ask for your support and help in getting re-elected by endorsing me and spreading the word.

John Wendland, Lake Oswego, is chairman of the Lake Oswego School Board. He is a candidate for position 3 on the board in May’s special election.
