'My head, heart, and hands in Lake Oswego schools every day'

My name is Karen Delaney and I am running for Lake Oswego School Board, Position 3.

Education has been a significant influence in my life. My husband Malcolm and I met at Mount Vernon High School in the suburbs of New York City. I went on to major in economics at Wellesley College and then study law at Cornell, while Malcolm graduated from MIT and earned a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Illinois. We want for our children what all parents want: the educational opportunities that will allow them to follow in our footsteps.Karen Delaney

Like many of you, we chose Lake Oswego as our home based on the strong reputation of its public schools. This reputation has been built over the decades through the partnership of dedicated teachers and staff, committed volunteers and faithful residents. However, looking ahead, the district’s reputation must be honored and enhanced by a school board that leads in a better way.

I believe I have the qualifications to serve on the Lake Oswego School Board. I worked in government, first for New York City’s Campaign Finance Board and then for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. An active participant in local youth groups, I have been a Girl Scout and Wil-LO-Linn leader; Fish Co. dinner cook at Lake Grove Presbyterian Church; Metropolitan Youth Symphony supporter; and Wellesley’s alumnae admissions representative in Oregon and Southwest Washington. As my supporters throughout the district will attest, I have been a passionate advocate who tackles complex issues. Most importantly, with children in grades 5, 9 and 10, I have my head, heart and hands in Lake Oswego schools every day.

From now to May 21, I will be attending with my fellow candidates many forums and town hall meetings. Through these venues and the Lake Oswego Review I will lay out my proposals for leading in a better way. These include:

  • A better way to prepare our kids for college.
  • A better way to develop workplace skills that will be relevant in a changing job market.
  • A better way to nurture the physical well-being of our children.
  • A better way to educate our kids from the start.
  • A better way to represent and connect our neighborhoods.

  • A better way to manage our district’s financial resources.
