We all agree. Now we need to check yes, mail our ballots and renew the local option levy. Vote yes on Measure 3-434.

I have been part of the Lake Oswego community for the majority of my life. I can’t remember the last time when everyone in Lake Oswego all agreed and supported a ballot measure so wholeheartedly. My goodness, even our beloved mayor and city council voted unanimously and wrote an outstanding letter of support of this measure last week. I genuinely thank all seven of them and all of the wonderful city groups and individuals that have rallied around renewing this important ballot measure. Renewing the school levy is important for everyone. Wendland

I am confident that the message has been delivered loud and clear about the mutual benefits to all of us of having a strong school district in our community and the importance of the levy to our operating budget. So I shall spare you the specifics. As a community we get it. We believe in and support education in Lake Oswego.

As a member of the school board, however, I need to tell you that you should also be very proud of the investment you are making in our schools. We have outstanding students that want to learn and feel supported by our community. And our schools produce outstanding results. This is not only demonstrated through top test scores but through students who are curious, thoughtful and ready to take on the world.

Every June, we graduate around 600 students and most are bound for colleges and universities around Oregon and the nation. Talk to our graduates about how well they are prepared for college and life. They will tell you some great stories. As someone who has been in business all my life, our levy return on investment is a homerun. Incrementally, the levy is a huge difference maker for students from kindergartners to seniors.

I am asking you to take the time to fill out your ballot and mail it in or drop it off at the library. Please take the time to vote yes. Let’s continue the LO tradition of supporting our kids and outstanding schools. If you have any questions about the levy, call me at 503-697-4020.

John Wendland, Lake Oswego, is a member of the Lake Oswego School Board.
