Pacer volleyball team is young but seasoned

Lakeridge features a deep and exciting squad in a wide-open TRL this year

by: VERN UYETAKE - Madison Marshall is one of two talented middle blockers returning for Lakeridge’s volleyball season this year along with Saskia McNairy. The Lakeridge volleyball team is one of the young squads in the league this year with just two seniors on the roster, but it's also extremely experienced.

The Pacers return both of their talented setters along with a pair of big middle blockers on a team that has some high expectations this season.

Colleen Brook and Kayla Troike are the lone seniors on this year's squad and they will play a key leadership role for the team.

The Pacers are led by junior setters McKenna Moore and Malia Scott, who have both been on varsity since their freshman year and who give Lakeridge a unique look when they're both on the court.

“We're running a 6-2 and both girls are so good at getting the ball to the middle. It's been so fun to watch. That combo is just awesome,” coach Wendy Stammer said.

In the middle are a pair of returning blockers in Madison Marshall and Saskia McNairy, both of whom give the Pacers a strong block and are key targets for the offense.

“Our middles are very tough and we're definitely looking to get the ball to them,” Stammer said.

On the outside, Kacie van Stiphout and Samantha Howley will both be impact players this season.

A freshmen will also be key to the Pacers' success this year in libero Emily Scott.

“She's a pretty dynamic little player,” Stammer said.

Lakeridge is also carrying five freshmen on the junior varsity team as there is an influx of young talent in the program.

The rest of the varsity squad will vie for playing time in early practices and matches.

“I like having that competition because the girls push each other,” Stammer said.

The team has been focusing on passing and serving early in the season and has looked strong against some solid competition.

The Three Rivers League appears to be very balanced and wide open again this year and the Pacers hope they can be in the mix down the stretch.

“It's anyone's game. I think each team has as good a chance as anyone else,” Stammer said.
