Big numbers highlight LO swim team season

The Lakers are deep and talented and hope to contend for the TRL title

The Lake Oswego swim team is blessed with huge numbers and plenty of talent this season which the Lakers hope will allow them to challenge for a league title this season.

Roughly 75 swimmers came out for the team this year giving the team depth and versatility.

“We are happy to have the large group. It's a lot of fun and an opportunity for kids to participate in a sport and build friendships,” coach Susan Branam said.

The team is still sorting out its optimal line-up but Lake Oswego appears to have talent across the board which could make the team a tough dual meet match-up.

For the boys, the Lakers are led by returning senior Luke Marshall who should be one of the top swimmer in the individual medley and the breaststroke in the league if not the state.

Logan Kojiro and Marcos Wolmarans will also be strong participants in both of those events to start the season.

Edward Kang and Ryan Sklar will fill in in the butterfly and backstroke for the Lakers while Aaron Perrine will be the team's sprint freestyler.

Austin Weng will also play a key role for Lake Oswego in the IM and the backstroke.

The team also had a large freshman class turnout, giving the squad plenty of depth.

“After our first few weeks we'll have a better idea of our personnel and what the line-ups will look like. We are in a good position of having some nice flexibility. Many of our kids can swim several different events and that makes it easier for the coaches,” Branam said.

The Lake Oswego girls have a strong core of returning swimmers to lead the way this year.

Celia Keany returns at backstroke and freestyle. Keany made the finals in both the 100 and 200 freestyle last year.

Maddie Luick is back in the IM and butterfly and Abby Lyons returns as the team's sprinter in the freestyle. Yifan Mao will also compete in the sprints this season while Amy Chen will fill in at backstroke.

Lauren Wagner will also play a big role on the team in the distance freestyle events this year.

Both teams should be near the top of the league and the Lakers' depth should make them a formidable dual meet opponent.

“We always hope, as a team, to capture the league title. It's a realistic goal this year. We should be competitive but we will undoubtedly have some close meets and that makes it fun,” Branam said.

Early in the season, the team is still focusing on putting together its best line-up and bringing its younger and more inexperienced swimmers along.

“We are focusing on conditioning and trying to develop an environment in the pool where the kids compete with each other and themselves on a daily basis,” Branam said.
