Pacer lacrosse team tops Lakers, WL looms

Lakeridge moves to 10-1 on the year with a strong fourth quarter against Lake Oswego

by: MATTHEW SHERMAN - Lakeridge's John Finegan absorbs a hit from a pair of Lakers in the Pacers' Civil War victory on Friday. It took the until the fourth quarter but the Lakeridge boys lacrosse team eventually pulled away from Lake Oswego in both teams' league opener last Friday for a 13-7 win.

The victory keeps the Pacers unbeaten against Oregon opponents this year heading into a huge showdown on Friday at West Linn.

The Lakers rallied from a 7-3 halftime deficit but the Pacers outscored Lake Oswego 5-1 in the final period, using a quick flurry early in the quarter to seal the game.

Lake Oswego got on the board first on a goal by Spencer Anderson but Lakeridge rallied quickly. The Pacers controlled much of the opening quarter, winning face-offs and dominating the time of possession.

Lakeridge tied the game on a man-up opportunity when Michael Ashworth found the back of the net. Less than two minutes later, Chris Barman gave the Pacers the lead.

Ashworth would put Lakeridge up 3-1 with his second goal of the game and the Pacers clearly had momentum.

However, Lake Oswego would respond and the defense did a nice job keeping the lead from extending any further.

Late in the quarter, the Lakers got on the board again with another tally from Anderson.

Then, with just 18 seconds left in the period, Michael Schou scored with the Lakers man-up and the game was tied after the opening stanza.

The opening minutes of the second quarter went back and forth but the Pacers started to control possession again late in the half.

Barman broke the scoring drought to put the Pacers up 4-3 and, less than a minute later, Lonzo Cristobal scored on a pass from Ashworth.

Cristobal would score again on an assist from Tyler Rich and, with two minutes to play in the half, JR McLaughlin would get on the board on an assist from Barman to give the Pacers a 7-3 lead at the break.

It seemed like Lakeridge was firmly in control of the game but Lake Oswego wasn't ready to go away.

The Lakers scored two minutes into the third quarter on a goal from Nate Gruen while Lakeridge countered with Ashworth's third goal of the night.

But Lake Oswego looked like a different team in the second half, tightening up defensively while also doing a better job on face-offs and earning considerably more possession.

The effort paid off late in the quarter on a goal by Christian Katlaps. Then, with 3.9 seconds left in the period, Schou scored a huge goal to make it 8-6 with one period to play.

However, Lakeridge made sure the momentum wouldn't extend into the fourth quarter.

After the first 2:30 of the final period went scoreless, Ashworth found the net again which opened the floodgates for the Pacers.

McLaughlin scored 30 seconds later and John Finegan and Camden Troike each notched goals as the Pacers pulled away.

Lakeridge will travel to face a West Linn team that is also undefeated against Oregon opponents this Friday while Lake Oswego will play Oregon City tonight (Thursday).
