Smythe announces plans to retire after season

The Pacer legend will end his second stint with the program this fall.

In a letter sent out to administration members on Tuesday night, Lakeridge High School football coach Tom Smythe announced his intent to resign at the end of the current season.

Smythe is currently serving his second stint as head coach of the Pacers, having led the team to its first and only state title in the sport during his initial tenure with the team.

Smythe has 49 years of coaching experience and returned to Lakeridge in 2009 to finish his high school coaching career in his hometown.

“I'm a Lake Oswego guy. My family moved here in 1946 and even though I've been away at times, I've never been very far,” Smythe said.

Since Smythe took over the program for the second time, the Pacers have made strides, with numbers increasing and the team having its most successful season in years this fall.

“He was exactly what we needed at the time. I don't think anybody would have been the right fit except for Tom Smythe. It's been a pleasure to get to watch him work and he will be missed. He brought an energy and excitement to the program and the kids and the community will be sad so see him go,” Lakeridge athletic director Ian Lamont said.

“I'm happy to have been a part of that and I think the program is in good shape for the next guy. When you have an opportunity to make an impact in your home town, it's pretty special,” Smythe said.

Smythe decided to announce his intentions before the end of the season to give notice to his friends, former players and assistant coaches and others whose lives he has affected over the years.

“My wife made the point that there might be a lot of people who will want to say goodbye and, after the season, we might be in Europe,” Smythe said.

The announcement follows one of Lakeridge's biggest wins in years, a 20-14 victory over rival Lake Oswego. Lakeridge wraps up the regular season Friday at West Linn.
