Lakeridge claims three of the four state singles berths

by: VERN UYETAKE - Lakeridge freshman Emmett Moore earned a trip to state and advanced to the district title match against teammate Matt Stephens. The Lakeridge boys will send three singles players and its top doubles team to state this year where it will look to potentially earn a trophy after a stellar regular season.

The Pacers put together an impressive showing in the singles bracket, claiming three of the four berths at state.

Top seeded Simon Homedes was dominant in his first three matches, winning each of them 6-0, 6-0 to make it to the semifinals.

There he ran into freshman teammate Emmett Moore, who had a fantastic showing in his first district tournament.

Moore had little trouble in the early going of his tournament, winning three straight matches in straight sets. In the quarterfinals, he knocked off No. 4 seed from Lake Oswego Avinash Sankar 6-0, 6-2 to set up a showdown with Homedes.

The top seed Homedes was cruising early on, winning the first set 6-0 before Moore rallied and captured the second set 6-4. The pair traded big shots in the third set with Moore eventually claiming the tiebreaker 7-4 to move into the finals.

Meanwhile, Matt Stephens, the No. 3 seed in the bracket, won his three early matches, losing just five total games in the process to earn his trip to state.

Lake Oswego's Quinn Hardy reached the quarterfinals with a pair of straight sets victories before falling to the No. 2 seed.

In doubles, Lakeridge's top squad of Bruno Homedes and Russell Risenhoover had the No. 3 seed in the tournament and rolled in their early matches winning 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

In the semis, they went up against the top-seeded Chin brothers from Grant. Homedes and Risenhoover were hot early, winning the opening set 6-3 before the Grant pair rallied in the second, winning it 6-2. However, the Pacers responded impressively and quickly regained control of the match, winning the third set 6-0.

For Lake Oswego, freshman pairing Eric Klein and Cade Peebles made it to the quarterfinals, winning a great battle in the second round 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Lakeridge's Adam Bartlett and Justin Jones also made an appearance in the quarters before falling to the No. 4 seed from Grant.

The state tournament will be held May 22-24 at the Portland Tennis Center and Tualatin Hills Recreation Center.
