The initial coaches poll of 2017-18 includes votes from two coaches in each league

PAMPLIN MEDIA GROUP: MILES VANCE - Jefferson's Marcus Tshonis (shown here in 2016) is back to lead the Democrats in search of a second straight Class 6A state championship.The beast from the Northeast — that would be the Jefferson boys basketball team from Northeast Portland — is back and back in style for 2017-18.

The Democrats, the 2017 Class 6A state champions, are ranked No. 1 in the first coaches poll of the season, followed by Southridge and Grant in the top three.

In the latest poll — with votes from two head coaches in each of the state's six Class 6A laeagues — Jefferson won 10 of the 12 first-place votes and is ranked first with 173 points, followed by Southridge with 154 points and Grant with one of the other two first-place votes and 128 points.

No. 11 Barlow, with 65 points, got the final first-place vote this week.
