Don't be a victim: Learn about scam, spam protection from FBI

Americans lose hundreds of millions of dollars each year to fraud. Billions more are lost worldwide to con artists touting the next great investment idea, guaranteed loans and diets that can't fail.

These con artists or scam specialists do not discriminate between the rich and poor, young and old, or by nationality or race. by: SUBMITTED - Members attending User Group at the Lake Oswego Adult Community Center include Susan Hornung, Bob Brownand Rhoda Moses.

They target the well-educated, so-called smart individuals, as well as those with less education and sophistication.

Learn how to detect Internet scams by educating yourself and avoid becoming a victim. Join the Computer Users Group July 16 for this informative meeting featuring guest speaker Ted Price, special agent for the F.B.I., discussing "Protection From Scams and Spam."

Friday, July 6

Obtain a free blood pressure check in the Cedar room between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. Walk in, no fee; donations accepted.

In Stitches, the center's quilting group, will meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., downstairs in the Birch room, working cooperatively on various quilting projects. Walk-ins welcome.

Join us for lunch served by Lake Bible Church volunteers. The menu includes tossed salad, grilled ham and cheese on whole-wheat bread, pasta salad, apple slices and pineapple apricot crisp for dessert. Lunch is a suggested donation of $4 for those 60 and older; for all others the cost is $5.

After lunch, join us for the Friday Matinee featuring "We Bought a Zoo" from 2011 starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson. The movie starts at 1 p.m.

The Jottings from 5th and G group meets today in the Cedar room at 1 p.m.

This group meets every other month and coordinates individual submissions on various topics for the Lake Oswego Review column. Interested writers are encouraged to join.

Monday, July 9

The Computer Users Group meets beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Join us for lunch served by volunteers from New Seasons Market.

Today our menu includes Caesar salad, Swedish meatballs, mashed potatoes, green beans, rye rolls and ice cream. Joan Diehl performs on the piano prior to lunch being served.

Suggested donation for those 60 and older is $4; $5 for those under 60.

Lunch and Shop begins at 1 p.m. following lunch. Join others as Jim Liu, our center driver, takes participants to Safeway for an hour of grocery shopping. Call to sign up.

Tuesday, July 10

The Happy Hikers group meets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 9:15 a.m. to explore the trails of Tryon Creek State Park.

The Lake Oswego Respite Program begins at 11:30 a.m. in the Acorn room.

The program costs $30 per participant each day, and is held both Tuesdays and Thursdays on an ongoing basis. Contact Berta Derman, human services supervisor, at 503-635-3758 to register for the program.

AARP Safe Driving Course begins today from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. and wraps up on Thursday.

This six-hour program is the nation's largest refresher driving course and helps refine existing skills and develop safe, defensive driving techniques. Cost is $12 for AARP members or $14 for non-members.

The Mental Illness Family Support Group meets today beginning at 2 p.m. in the Cedar room.

This group is open to anyone caring for a loved one with mental health issues. Walk-ins welcome, no fee to attend.

Wednesday, July 11

Lake Grove Garden Club will serve lunch at noon and our menu includes cottage cheese with peaches, chicken salad on greens with ranch dressing, fresh melon, wheat rolls and oatmeal cookies for dessert.

Suggested donation for those 60 and over is $4; $5 for those under 60. Lunch is served at noon. Call 503-635-3758 if you are coming.

The weekly Supervised Computer Lab runs from 12:30 to 2 p.m. downstairs in the Center's Computer Learning Center.

No reservations required, just stop by.

From 1 to 3 p.m. experienced pinochle players meet in the Willow room. Call in advance to help the group coordinate play.

American mah jongg meets and plays between 1 and 4 p.m. in the Birch room at no cost. This group is for experienced players.

Creative Hands meets in the Dogwood room from 9:30 a.m. to noon to work on handicraft projects benefiting various charities in the community. Come and join us.

Join us for a game of Scrabble, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Willow room.
