Learn tips, strategies to adapt to vision loss, rehabilitation

Our monthly vision group meets this week with a special guest speaker, Grace Tran, OD, FAAO, instructor of Ophthalmology at Oregon Health & Science University, Casey Eye Institute and Evelyn L. Jones Vision Rehabilitation Service.

Tran will discuss low vision and low vision rehabilitation. She will include tips and strategies to adapt to vision loss as well as resources in the community.

Tran encourages questions and will assist in problem solving some of the challenges you face living with low vision. The vision group meets Monday, Sept. 24, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. No registration is required and is open to the community.

Friday, Sept. 21

Obtain a free blood pressure check in the Cedar room between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. Walk-ins welcome, donations accepted. In Stitches, the center’s quilting group, will meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., downstairs in the Birch room, and will work cooperatively on various quilting projects. Walk-ins welcome.

Join us for lunch served by Marge and Friends. The menu includes fruit plate, meatballs in marinara sauce served over a bed of spaghetti, zucchini, focaccia and marionberry coffee cake for dessert. Lunch is a suggested donation of $4 for those 60 and older; all others cost is $5. The MAC user group meets today from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the Alder room.

Sunday, Sept. 23

Join the adult community center for the monthly solo dinner. This group is open to all center members who do not have a significant other and would enjoy the company of others for a casual Sunday mid-day dinner. Participants will gather at Szechuan Kitchen in Lake Oswego on Sept. 23 at 2 p.m. Center membership is required, cost of dinner is on your own and we meet at the restaurant. Monday, Sept. 24

The computer users’ group meets in the Alder room from 9:30 to 11 a.m. with state-of-the-art equipment including both PCs and MACs.

Newcomers Welcome Club serves lunch today, which includes spinach salad, chicken cordon bleu served with orzo, beets, wheat rolls and for dessert, oatmeal cookies. Lunch is a suggested donation of $4 for those 60 and older; all others cost is $5. Call 503-635-3758 to reserve a seat.

Lunch and shop begins at 1 p.m. Join others as center driver Jim Liu takes participants to Safeway for an hour of grocery shopping. Call the center on or before Monday to sign up.

The vision group meets at 1 p.m. in the Acorn room. This monthly group offers visually impaired adults an opportunity to obtain information, education and mutual support. Duplicate bridge meets from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Alder room to play competitive bridge, contact Jeanette Roberts at 503-620-5036. Cost is $1 per person at the door and membership is required.

Tuesday, Sept. 25

The Happy Hikers group meets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 9:15 a.m. to explore the trails of Tryon Creek State Park. The Lake Oswego respite program begins at 11:30 a.m. in the Acorn room. The program costs $30 per participant each day, and is held both Tuesdays and Thursdays on an ongoing basis. Pre-arranged bridge meets from noon to 3 p.m. in the Dogwood room for open play. Contact Sharon Paz at 503-636-9757. There is no cost and membership is required.

Wednesday, Sept. 26

The foot care clinic occurs today between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. in the Cedar room. Meet by appointment only, call 503-635-3758. Cost is $30 payable to Foot Care Nurses LLC. Please bring a plastic basin and two small towels.

The arthritis group meets today in the Alder room beginning at 10 a.m. This monthly meeting features a variety of programs and a guest speaker to benefit those living with arthritis.

Come and join us for this month’s birthday lunch, especially if you are celebrating a birthday in September. Enjoy applesauce, sole Florentine with rice pilaf, peas and corn, dinner rolls and birthday cake for dessert. Lunch will be served by City Slickers and suggested donation for those 60 and over is $4; $5 for those under 60. Seating begins at 11:30 a.m. and lunch is served promptly at noon. The weekly supervised computer lab runs from 12:30 to 2 p.m. downstairs in the Alder room. Everyone is welcome. Experienced pinochle players will play from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Willow room. Call in advance to let us know you are coming so the pinochle group can coordinate play. American mah jongg meet and play between 1 and 4 p.m. each Wednesday in the Birch room at no cost. This group is for experienced players.

Thursday, Sept. 27

Creative Hands meets in the Dogwood room from 9:30 a.m. to noon to work on handicraft projects benefiting various charities in the community. Play a game of Scrabble from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Willow room. Drop-ins welcome.
