Calmness returns following the election

WLACC events and activities

It was the day after our national election, just before noon. Most seniors at the West Linn Adult Community Center were waiting for lunch. A little crabbiness — perhaps brought on by hunger — contributed to a certain palpable cynicism in the air.

You would expect most of this crowd to be a little grumpy — the Democrats did well in general and Obama did well specifically. But no.This is not your grandmother’s senior center. The mood was generally good!

A not-very-scientific survey revealed that of 35 seniors who were asked whether they were happy or unhappy with the outcome of the presidential election, 22 indicated happiness, seven were unhappy, two didn’t care and four became preoccupied with their fingernails, went into a fugue state and refused to talk at all.

Seniors come to the center for activities and social interaction. They take their blood pressure readings seriously and don’t want them elevated. It’s an unwritten, unspoken rule at the WLACC that we don’t talk politics. Most people adhere, and those who don’t, generally get themselves in trouble sooner or later.

But in this case, all 35 participating seniors were in ecstatic agreement about one political milestone: The election was over.

“I can start watching the TV news again,” one senior said.

“I won’t be getting any more political ads in my mailbox!” said another.

“Even NPR radio has been tedious lately,” said another.

Now talk returned to grandchildren, gardening, line dancing and card games. Blood pressures held steady. The election was over and tranquility was restored.
