by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - Seniors discuss the Socratic Method at the Lake Oswego Senior Center. Check out our newest discussion group to meet at the Lake Oswego Adult Community Center, the Socrates Cafe. The group is fashioned after the Socratic Method where people from different backgrounds get together and exchange thoughtful ideas and experiences in a comfortable and friendly setting.

The Socrates Cafe meets the first Monday of each month at 1 p.m. There is no cost to join and drop-ins are welcome. Facilitator Norma Heyser leads the group along with volunteers who assist in moving things along.

“It is becoming clear to me that we are all gifts to each other, enthusiastic, comfortable and exploring and growing with a little help from each other,” Heyser said.

Friday, Nov. 30
The center’s quilting group, In Stitches, will meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Birch room. The group will work cooperatively on various quilting projects. Walk-ins are welcome. The Special Interest Investment Group meets today at 10 a.m. in the Alder room. The group is for those who are enthusiastic about sharing their interests of investments. The group meets for free and drop-ins are welcome.

Join us for lunch served by the Rotary Club of Lake Oswego. The menu includes Asian slaw, chicken teriyaki, rice, peas and carrots, rolls and Jell-O with mandarin oranges for dessert. Lunch is a suggested donation of $4 for those 60 and better; all others cost is $5.

Monday, Dec. 3
The computer users group meets in the Alder room from 9:30 to 11 a.m. to discuss various topics on what’s happening in the computer world. Our Lady of the Lake Church serves lunch at noon, which will include tossed salad, pork with cranberry sauce, brown rice, green beans, rosemary rolls and pear spice cake. Suggested donation for those 60 and over is $4; $5 for those under 60.

Lunch and shop begins at 1 p.m. Center driver Jim Liu will take participants to Safeway for an hour of grocery shopping. Call the center on or before Monday to sign up. Join us at 1 p.m. for the Woodman Chronicles presented by Frank Woodman. This session’s theme is “Backstage Movies.” The fourth movie in our series is “Easter Parade,” starring Judy Garland and Fred Astaire. Come and enjoy the movie followed by a friendly and enlightening discussion.

Tuesday, Dec. 4
The Happy Hikers group meets Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 9:15 a.m. to explore the trails of Tryon Creek State Natural Area and a number of other local trails. The group also meets Saturdays at George Rogers Park. Hikes are led by Krstl Robbins and Joan Bollman.

The Lake Oswego Respite Program begins at 11:30 a.m. in the Acorn room. The program costs $30 per participant each day, and is held Tuesdays and Thursdays on an ongoing basis. Contact Human Services Supervisor Berta Derman at 503-635-3758 to register for the program.

Wednesday, Dec. 5
The widowed support group meets today in the Cedar room beginning at 10 a.m. Expect to be greeted with acceptance and understanding by the men and women in this group. The group is free and walk-ins are welcome. The Lake Oswego Economic and Capital Development Department serves lunch at noon, which includes spinach salad, Swedish meatballs with egg noodles, broccoli, rye rolls and chocolate chip cookies for dessert. Lunch is a suggested donation of $4 for those 60 and better; all others cost is $5. Call 503-635-3758 if you are coming.

The weekly supervised computer lab runs from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the Alder room. Everyone is welcome. The book discussion group meets today in the Cedar room at 1 p.m. New participants are welcome. Experienced pinochle players meet in the Willow room from 1 to 3 p.m. Call in advance to let us know you are coming so as to coordinate play.

American mah jongg meet and play from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays in the Birch room. This group is for experienced players. Weekly Current Events with the Senior Studies Institute (SSI) meets at the WEB from 1 to 3 p.m.

The cost is an annual membership to SSI for $30; you may attend two sessions before you must join. Engage with others in discussions on various topics and current events.

Thursday, Dec. 6
Creative Hands meets in the Dogwood room from 9:30 a.m. to noon to work on handicraft projects benefiting various charities in the community. New participants always welcome. Join us for a game of Scrabble, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Willow room. Games are led by Ruth Hamilton and drop-ins always welcome.
