LO Parks and Recreation activities


Try your luck at the Luscher Farm Garden Plot Lottery, which opens Dec. 17. Winning the lottery will allow you to grow your own fresh organic produce at the Lake Oswego Community Garden at the historic Luscher Farm.

Each gardener is required to attend a garden program orientation and provide four hours of volunteer service at Luscher Farm during the season. Call 503-638-0376 to enter your name, address and phone number.

The Garden Plot Lottery closes Dec. 28. Selected community members will be notified by phone by the Lake Oswego Parks & Recreation Department and non-selected will be notified by letter.

Don’t forget, Lake Oswego is a magical place to be during the holidays! Here are upcoming activities through the department:

Bob Ross Oil Painting: Christmas Eve Snow — Baby it’s cold outside. Stay nice and warm at the West End Building and experience the joy of oil painting during the holiday season. This easy step-by-step class takes beginners to seasoned painters from blank canvas to a finished masterpiece in one class.

Take home a painting to wrap as a lovely gift for your family. All supplies are provided and students may bring their favorite holiday snacks or beverage. Physically challenged students welcome. Age 12 and older, Dec. 17, 5:30 to 9 p.m., $50.

ASAP Friday Night Field Trip — Join your Teen Lounge friends this holiday season for a trip to the movies to see “The Hobbit, An Unexpected Journey.” Come see the much anticipated prequel to the “Lord of the Rings.” Dinner is provided. Christmas Ships Parade — Dec. 15 marks the 58th year of the magical Christmas Ships Parade. This holiday tradition began in 1954 with a lone sailboat from the Portland Yacht Club. Boats from 14 to 65 feet long will be brightly colored for the holiday season. Two fleets, featuring up to 60 boats, will make their way to Lake Oswego.

The boats will depart from River Place Marina and continue as far as George Rogers Park in Lake Oswego, arriving between 6:15 and 6:30 p.m. Make plans to enjoy the sparkle of colorful flotillas from the shores of the Willamette at the beautiful Foothills Park. Carriage Rides — Experience the thrill of an old-fashioned horse-drawn carriage this holiday season. Slow down and savor the sights and sounds with a memorable sleigh ride through downtown Lake Oswego. Snuggle under the blankets and enjoy the magic of the majestic horses. Adults and children alike insist on making this an annual holiday tradition. Join us at Millenium Plaza Park on Dec. 9, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Dec. 14, 4:30 to 8:30 p.m., Dec. 15, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Adults $3, 10 years and under $1, and 2 years and under are free.

Holiday Houses of Lake Oswego — Celebrate the holiday season with Lake Oswego Parks & Recreation’s third annual Gingerbread House Competition. Local businesses will show their skills by creating a one-of-a-kind gingerbread house to display in their store. Pick up your tour map from the Parks & Recreation Department, visit all the homes and vote for your favorite holiday house. The winner of the competition will receive a brilliant trophy and bragging rights for the whole year.
