Twas the week after Christmas ...

WLACC events and activities

Twas the week after Christmas, when all through the center, not a senior was stirring, not even a renter.

The white board was hung by the front door as usual, no activities were listed, no cause for perusal.

The seniors were jonesing all warm in their shanties, no cards to play this week; no need to make antes.

And Lynn in her office, no rest for the weary. This job’s not bad, when there’s no one to query.

Out on the lawn there was no hint of a clatter, there was no need to check, the lion no fatter.

Down the long hallway, our tree still stood trimmed, awaiting the hour when Marie ordered it limbed.

No Al could be found with paper just reading, no Lloyd came for lunch, no garden club seeding.

The computers were quiet, their screens were all blank, the walkers weren’t walking, the garden was dank.

No dogs downward facing in yoga would pose, no flowers from Judy on tables in rows.

No exercise classes would Marilyn teach, who else would step up to remind us to reach?

But now ‘tis January past two thousand twelve, the center is open, it’s time to re-delve, into those activities that keep us all young, that keep us alive with fitness and fun.

So the New Year begins with resolutions a-making, and we at the center just hope you’ll be taking, advantage of all that we offer up here, and that you’ll have a fine brand new year.

Here are the upcoming week’s activities. Call the WLACC at 503-557-4704 for specific times and possible fees. All meals listed below are subject to change, but only for the better. Computer classes are offered by appointment between 9 a.m. and noon, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. The WLACC will be closed Dec. 28 through Jan. 1.

Wednesday, Jan. 2 — In the morning, we offer the Peripatetic Walking group, chair aerobics class, core strength class, strength and balance class and the gardening club will meet today. The pilates-inspired core strength class will meet off site at 9:45 a.m. The line dancing class meets from 11 a.m. to noon. A visiting nurse will perform complimentary blood pressure checks from 11 a.m. to noon today. No appointment is needed.

At noon, we will have our monthly birthday brunch. Those with birthdays in January will eat for free; all others pay $3. After lunch, the pinochle group will shuffle and deal from 12:30 to 3 p.m.

Thursday, Jan. 3 — The Share Singers group will visit Homewood Heights today. Our other morning offerings include core strength class, strength and balance class and our gentle yoga class. The knitting/crocheting group will convene at 10 a.m. and the bridge group meets at 10:30 a.m.

WLACC Gift Shop — Come visit the best-kept shopping secret in town! Because we receive so many wonderful donated items, you never know what treasures you might find. Recently, we received an assortment of vintage Spode Copeland dishware in the Rose Briar pattern. The set including a teapot, five teacups, 17 saucers and more.

Also new to our shop are locally made sterling silver rings and earrings with genuine stones, such as amethysts, blue topaz, garnets and opals. The shop also carries colorful roll-on bracelets made of tiny beads. The greeting card selection has also expanded.

Please remember our gift shop as you are downsizing or going through things after the holidays. We are happy to accept many kinds of donated items as long as they’re in good shape. All the gift shop workers are volunteers and fundraising goes toward our building expansion. The WLACC Gift Shop is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The gift shop accepts cash, checks and well-behaved children.
