Marilyn Frankel debunks health myths

Check out WLACC events and activities

by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - Stretching cold muscles excessively can actually do more damage than good. Muscles should be warm before stretching to protect against straining/pulling.Last month, Marilyn Frankel, our resident exercise physiologist, gave a talk in which she disabused us of some common health misconceptions. Here are the true/false questions she posited:

1. Stretching before exercise is always good for you. The more you do the better.

2. You burn more fat during a workout if you never stop moving.

3. Age always brings weight gain.

4. You can’t be fit if you’re fat.

5. You can spot reduce.

6. No pain, no gain.

7. Thirty minutes of exercise a day will keep me in shape.

And here’s what Marilyn said:

1. False — Stretching cold muscles excessively can actually do more damage than good. Muscles should be warm before stretching to protect against straining/pulling.

2. False — Taking short breaks during a workout does not decrease the amount of fat you burn as long as you complete the workout.

3. True and false (trick answer) — Generally, metabolism and activity level slow with age. But if calorie intake decreases, weight gain need not occur.

4. False — You can be overweight and fit. In fact, in terms of longevity, overweight fit people live longer than thin non-fit people.

5. False — Spot reducing just doesn’t work. You lose inches everywhere when you lose weight.

6. False — Pain or discomfort is not helpful to an exercise program. It will often discourage a person from continuing.

7. False — If you’re sedentary the rest of the day, 30 minutes of exercise won’t keep you fit.
