WLACC events and activities

If you’ve lived in West Linn very long, you may well have run into Loren Krebs, a life-long resident SUBMITTED - Loren Krebs displays examples of his carved Santa, Old Salt and Santa-in-progress.

Krebs is a 1965 graduate of West Linn High School and a man who appreciates wood. Krebs spent 27 years in the lumber business working for Disdero Lumber Company, and he developed a fondness for wood that’s turned into a hobby now that he’s retired.

When he learned of the woodcarving group that meets at the West Linn Adult Community Center every Monday at 9 a.m., he decided to investigate.

Krebs brought his basic woodcarving tool set to the WLACC one Monday and he liked the group.

“It offers all types of carving and all levels of expertise from beginner to accomplished carver,” he said.

Participants carve figures in the round and in relief. Some make musical instruments, some make eagles, fish or bears. But they all are happy to give and receive advice and gentle teasing as they work. Although the group has more males, there are several women who regularly participate as well, and for them, Krebs is especially grateful.

“Having some ladies here helps keep a lid on the rest of us,” he said. “Without them we’d all be derelicts.”

Kreb’s specialties are Santa figures and Old Salts — well-weathered sea-captain-type figures. In 2012, he carved 35 Santas and two Old Salts. Unless tendonitis — a common problem among carvers — slows him down, he plans to do at least 50 figures this year.

Each carving takes between 12 and 17 hours to complete. Krebs spends a lot of time carving at home where he can multitask, listening to culturally enriching shows on the radio while he works. He carves his figures in soft basswood, paints them, and gives them to friends and relatives as gifts.

If this sounds like an activity you’d like to join, come to the WLACC any Monday between 9 and 11 a.m. There is no cost, but you must provide your own tools and materials.
