Get free help with tax preparation

WLACC events and activities

If you’d like help with your taxes this year, consider making an appointment with the AARP Tax-Aide people who will offer free assistance at the West Linn Adult Community Center every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 5 through April 9. These volunteers have been trained and certified by the IRS and AARP, and their services are in great demand at the WLCC every year.

The AARP Tax-Aide program is a free tax assistance service for low- and middle-income taxpayers with special attention paid to those 60 and older. The program has more than 32,000 volunteers staffing 6,500 sites across the country, and the WLACC is one of several sites in the Portland area.

It all began in 1968 when an IRS employee and an AARP executive had a casual conversation about how older tax filers often made mathematical mistakes, use incorrect forms or fail to take credits to which they were entitled. This chat resulted in a formal agreement between AARP and the IRS to train volunteers and offer free tax assistance nationwide.

Tax-Aide volunteers are trained to help you complete the standard 1040 form and the more standard schedules, like A and B. Also, the volunteers can help you submit your taxes electronically, thereby increasing accuracy and faster processing of returns. Make an appointment for tax assistance by calling the front desk at 503-557-4704.
