Relax, refresh and renew at caregivers retreat

Are you caring for a family member with a physical illness, disability or dementia?

The Lake Oswego Adult Community Center is offering caregivers an opportunity to relax, refresh and renew. “Care for Caregivers Retreat, Food for the Soul: A Time of Renewal” will be held April 27 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at TaborSpace in Portland.

Attendees will have an opportunity to connect with nature, participate in laughter yoga, Tai Chi, chair massages, music and horticulture therapy, as well as many other fun and relaxing activities.

Breakfast and lunch are included and financial assistance is available to cover the cost of in-home care for your loved one while you attend the retreat. Registration is required. This event is sponsored by a grant made possible by the Lake Oswego Adult Foundation and hosted by the Lake Oswego Adult Community Center staff.

Friday, March 22

Lunch will be served by the Lake Oswego Fire Department. The menu includes caesar salad, sole florentine, rice pilaf, glazed beets, freshly baked dinner rolls and oatmeal cookies for dessert. Suggested donation for those 60 and over is $4; $5 for those under 60. Lunch is served promptly at noon. Call 503-635-3758 for a reservation.

After lunch, Woodman Chronicles will present “The Three Musketeers” (1948) featuring Gene Kelly and Lana Turner.

Monday, March 25

The Computer and Technology Users Group meets from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Everyone is welcome to drop by. Contact the center for more information.

The Newcomers Welcome Club serves lunch. The menu includes spinach salad, beef stroganoff with egg noodles, green and yellow squash, freshly baked rye rolls and walnut tea cookies for dessert.

Take advantage of Lunch and Shop. Following lunch take the center’s van to Safeway for your weekly shopping. Participants ride the center’s lift van to Safeway and are delivered home with their groceries. The driver can assist with parcels as needed too. There is a suggested donation of $1 for this service. Socrates Café meets in the Acorn room from 1 to 3 p.m. This is a discussion group where people from different backgrounds get together and exchange thoughtful ideas and experiences while embracing the Socratic Method.

Tuesday, March 26

The Happy Hikers group meets on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:15 a.m. to explore the trails of Tryon Creek State Park, Foothills, Willamette Park and more. Carpool or caravan will leave from LOACC east parking lot. Saturday morning group meets at George Rogers Park lower at 9:30 a.m.

The Lake Oswego Respite Program begins at 11:30 a.m. in the Acorn room. The program costs $30 per participant each day, and is held Tuesdays and Thursdays on an ongoing basis. Contact Berta Derman, human services supervisor, at 503-635-3758 to register.

Wednesday, March 27

The Arthritis Group meets from 10 to 11:30 a.m. These monthly meetings feature a variety of programs to benefit those living with arthritis. No fee and walk-ins welcome.

Lunch will be served by the City Slickers. Menu includes broccoli slaw, seafood quiche with sides of potato wedges and butternut squash, freshly made wheat rolls and birthday cake for dessert.

Suggested donation for those 60 and over is $4; $5 for those under 60. Seating opens at 11:30 a.m. and lunch is served promptly at noon. Call 503-635-3758 and let us know if you would like to join us!

The weekly supervised computer lab runs from 12:30 to 2 p.m. downstairs in the Alder room. Everyone is welcome.

Experienced pinochle play happens from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Willow room. Call in advance to let us know you are coming so that pinochle group can coordinate play.

American mah jongg players meet between 1 and 4 p.m. each Wednesday in the Birch room at no cost. This group is for experienced players.

Supporting LO Caregivers group meets the fourth Wednesday of each month from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and is designed for individuals providing care for an adult family member or friend with a physical illness or disability. No cost and walk-ins welcome. Ruth C. Cohen, LCSW, is the facilitator.

Thursday, March 28

AARP Tax Assistance Program: Trained volunteers prepare federal and state tax returns free of charge via e-filing. Bring copies of 2011 returns and all documents related to earned income (W2s), dividend and interest (1099s), etc. Must bring photo ID to appointment. Registration is required and space is limited. Call 503-635-3758 to make an appointment.

Creative Hands meets in the Dogwood room from 9:30 a.m. to noon to work on handicraft projects benefiting various charities in the community. New participants are always welcome.
