Join the fun on spring bike rides

by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - Enjoy a spring bike ride with friends from the Lake Oswego Adult Community Center.Come along with a group from the Lake Oswego Adult Community Center for two spring break bike rides on April 11 and April 25.

We’ll start the rides at Sellwood Park and go along the Springwater Corridor toward Gresham. The path provides you with a gradual pace and roundtrip is approximately 26 miles. Bring money for lunch as the group will have a rest stop at Jazzy Bagel in Gresham. Dress appropriately for the weather, but if it’s pouring down rain, the ride will be canceled.

Bring your own helmet, tire pump, patch kit and water bottle. This is not a trip for beginners. Meet at Sellwood Park at 10 a.m. ACC members $5 all others $7. For more information, call the center at 503-635-3758.

Friday, April 5

Lunch will be served by members of the Lake Bible Church. The lunch includes Caesar salad, tuna casserole, braised red cabbage, freshly baked rye rolls and chocolate cake for dessert. Suggested donation for those 60 and over is $4; $5 for those under 60. Lunch is served promptly at noon. Call 503-635-3758 for a reservation.

After lunch we have our Woodman Chronicles. The movie today will be “Duck Soup” from 1933 featuring the Marx Brothers

Monday, April 8

The Computer and Technology Users’ Group will meet from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Everyone is welcome to drop by. Contact the center for more information.

Lunch is served by New Seasons Market. Lunch starts with raita and the main dish is curried chicken with rice, side dish of broccoli, pita bread and orange sherbet for dessert.

Lunch and Shop. Come to the center for lunch, and then take our center’s lift van to Safeway for an hour of weekly shopping. The van then drives participants home. Our driver can assist with parcels as needed, too. There is a suggested donation of $1 for this service.

Socrates Café meets today in the Acorn room from 1 to 3 p.m. This is a discussion group where people from different backgrounds get together and exchange thoughtful ideas and experiences while embracing the Socratic Method.

Tuesday, April 9

The Happy Hikers group meets on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:15 a.m. to explore the trails of Tryon Creek State Park, Foothills, Willamette Park and more. Carpool or caravan will leave from LOACC east parking lot to park. Saturday morning group meets at George Rogers Park Lower at 9:30 a.m.

The Lake Oswego Respite Program begins at 11:30 a.m. in the Acorn room. The program costs $30 per participant each day, and is held both Tuesdays and Thursdays on an ongoing basis.

Part II: Preventing Type II Diabetes: A 12- week workshop meets 7 to 8:30 pm. A certified diabetes educator and coach is an invaluable asset to help healthy boomers and others learn the skills and tools necessary to prevent diabetes and to assist those who have been newly diagnosed and how to self-manage the disease.

Wednesday, April 10

Our Widows Support Group meets from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Expect to be greeted with acceptance and understanding by the men and women in this group. The members, all of whom have lost a spouse, offer encouragement and hope for maintaining a meaningful life in spite of the changes. No fee and walk-ins are welcome.

Lunch will be served by members of the Lake Oswego Rotary Club. Lunch will start with Caesar salad, main dish is pork fajitas quesadillas, Spanish rice, green beans and chocolate coconut macaroons for dessert. Suggested donation for those 60 and older is $4; $5 for those under 60. Seating opens at 11:30 a.m. and lunch is served promptly at noon. The weekly supervised computer lab runs from 12:30 to 2 p.m. downstairs in the Alder room. Everyone is welcome.

From 1 to 3 p.m., experienced pinochle players meet in the Willow Room. Please call in advance to let us know you are coming so we can coordinate play.

American mah jongg meets and plays between 1 and 4 p.m. in the Birch room at no cost. This group is for experienced players.

Diabetes Support group meets from 7 to 8:30 p.m. This group is designed to assist those with diabetes and their families self-manage their disease. No cost and walk-ins welcome.

Thursday, April 11

AARP Tax Assistance Program: Trained volunteers prepare federal and state tax returns free of charge via e-filing. Bring copies of 2011 returns and all documents related to earned income (W2s), dividend and interest (1099s), etc. Must bring photo ID to appointment. Registration is required and space is limited.

Creative Hands meets in the Dogwood room from 9:30 a.m. to noon to work on handicraft projects benefiting various charities in the community. New participants always welcome!
