Marys Woods studying living needs of seniors, mailing surveys

Surveys to be mailed to 6,000 households in Portland Lake Oswego, West Linn

Mary’s Woods, a nonprofit continuing care retirement community (CCRC) adjacent to Marylhurst University in Lake Oswego, is undertaking an in-depth study of the living needs, desires and expectations of people in the second half of life.

“Research shows that new generations of older Americans have different ideas about how they want to address this phase of life, so we’re sending invitation to 6,000 households in the Lake Oswego, West Linn and Portland areas to share their ideas with us,” said Marvin Kaiser, chief executive officer of Mary’s Woods. “We would like people to be our advisers, designers and planners for a new array of housing and service options. In short, this is an opportunity to be pioneers and pilots for new ideas.”

The invitations provide a link to a secure website where people are asked to share their ideas. Participants can then choose to join an online panel and engage in future discussions with their peers about the topics. Responses from the community will provide the foundation for planning additional living options and services; however, no one will be contacted again, unless they opt to stay involved.

“We recognize that people who are in their sixth decade and beyond are different from previous generations,” said Kaiser. “They want new options in services and living environments in addition to traditional CCRCs. Opportunities that interest them may not even exist yet. Therefore, we are seeking the advice and opinions of the community to aid us in the design of new models.”

Surveys were expected to be in the mail by this weekend. Those who don’t receive a survey and would like to share their opinions should contact Cheri Mussotto-Conyers at 503-675-2441.
