West Linn Lutherans vacation Bible camp to focus on helping homeless

Socks will be donated

One of West Linn Lutheran Church’s missions is to “branch out boldly” into the community, and this year a new opportunity to do that is being offered to vacation Bible school campers.

“For over 50 years WLLC has been providing a vacation Bible school day camp to the West Linn community,” said Julie Mankin, ministry operations coordinator for the church. “Service is an integral part of WLLC and day camp provides children a firsthand experience.

This year, campers will have the opportunity to donate socks to the Father’s Heart Street Ministry in Oregon City.

The Father’s Heart Street Ministry is a nonprofit organization helping the poor and homeless in Clackamas County.”

“Every year we focus on a ministry for children and this year is no different,” said Jen Capener, director of children and families ministry for the church. “Last year we collected food for the West Linn Food Pantry and gave more than 500 pounds of food. Our giving option this year is to provide socks. Socks are a tangible way for children to understand and relate to the plight of the homeless. Our theme this year is Adventure Is Everywhere: Explore the Call.”

The vacation Bible school day camp will run June 24 through 27 for children in preschool through fifth grade. Preschool- and kindergarten-age children will meet from 9:15 to 11:45 a.m. Children in first through fifth grade will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The admission fee for preschool- and kindergarten-age campers is $25; older children are admitted for $45.

“People don’t often realize that there is (ha omeless) population within our own community,” said Mankin. “Homelessness affects people of all ages and races. Socks are a small contribution that help in a big way. Socks are integral to the health and well-being of those living on the streets.”
