Diabetes resources available at center

Looking for new diabetic snack treats? The Lake Oswego Adult Community Center offers monthly support sessions on the second Wednesday of every month.

You don’t have to wait till next month to get started. Stop by the center or call at 503-636-3758 to learn more today.

This week we feature a quick and easy recipe that anyone can make and it tastes delicious without the worry or guilt.

Stuffed Strawberries

1 pound fresh strawberries

4 ounces fat free cream cheese

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

2 1/2 teaspoons Splenda sugar substitute

Directions:

1. Clean the strawberries and cut the tops off so that they are flat. Place them on a plate.

2. Use a small knife to make a hole in the bottom of the strawberries.

3. With a mixer, blend the cream cheese with the vanilla and Splenda.

4. Using a small spoon, put little dollops of the cream cheese in the holes in the strawberries.

5. Chill until ready to serve.

Friday, July 12

In Stitches, the center’s quilting group, will meet from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., downstairs in the Birch room, working cooperatively on various quilting projects. Walk-ins are welcomed to join this great group.

The Rotary Club of Lake Oswego serves lunch at noon. The menu consists of a Caesar salad, pork with pineapple sauce, rice pilaf, butternut squash, wheat rolls and ginger molasses cookies for desert. Suggested donation for those 60 and older is $4; $5 for those under 60.

Monday, July 15

The Computer Users Group meets beginning at 9:30 a.m. Guest speakers are Hale Christian and Rebecca Fetters. They will explain how the state in conjunction with the banking industry is working to prevent elder abuse and financial exploitation. The banking industry is going to teach their employees how to be alert to elder financial abuse.

Lake Oswego Municipal Employees Association/AFSCME Local 1546 serves lunch at noon, which will consist of tossed salad, cheddar chicken, mashed potatoes, broccoli and cauliflower, rye rolls and marionberry coffee cake for dessert. Suggested donation for those 60 and older is $4; $5 for those under 60. Call before 10:45 a.m. for reservations.

Mixed media is an art class designed to give the student an opportunity to bring in a media of choice to work on in a supportive and social setting. Membership is required to participate.

Tuesday, July 16

The Happy Hikers group meets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 9:15 a.m. to explore the trails of Tryon Creek State Park and other surrounding areas. Sign in at the monitor in the lobby and hikers carpool to the daily destination together. For information on joining, call Krystal at 503-635-0041.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays each week, our respite program is held for people with Alzheimer’s and other dementia. this provides a four-hour break for the caregiver and includes lunch for their loved one. The program begins at 11:30 a.m. Contact Berta Derman, human services supervisor, to register for the program. Cost is $30.

The Caregivers Group meets in the Cedar room from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. This group is open to family members and friends caring for older adults with memory issues. No cost and walk ins are welcome.

Wednesday July 17

United Methodist Church serves lunch at noon and the menu includes Caesar salad, meatballs in marinara sauce over spaghetti, zucchini, focaccia and tapioca pudding for dessert. Lunch is a suggested donation of $4 for those 60 and older; all others cost is $5. Call before 10:45 am for reservations.

The weekly supervised computer lab runs from 1 to 2:30 p.m. downstairs in the Alder room. No reservations required, just stop by.

Weekly Current Events with the Senior Studies Institute meets from 1 to 3 p.m. The cost is an annual membership to SSI for $30; you may attend two sessions before you must join. Engage with others in discussions on various topics and current events.

From 1 to 3 p.m. experienced pinochle players meet in the Willow room. Call in advance to let us know you are coming so that play can be coordinated.

Those wanting to play American mah jongg meet between 1 and 4 p.m. each Wednesday in the Birch room at no cost. This group is for experienced players. Membership is required to participate in this group. Stop at the front desk to join today.

Thursday, July 18

Creative Hands meets in the Dogwood room from 9:30 a.m. to noon to work on handicraft projects benefiting various charities in the community. Come and join us.

Join in a game of Scrabble, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Willow room. Drop-ins welcome.

The Lake Oswego Respite Program begins at 11:30 a.m. in the Acorn room. The program costs $30 per participant each day and is held both Tuesday and Thursday on an ongoing basis. Contact Berta Derman to register for the program.
