Opportunities for summer fun are still available

West Linn Parks and Recreation offers a wide variety of summer programs and camps.

Chess Wizards offers a summer camp for ages 7 to 12: Aug. 26 to 30, 9 a.m. to noon at the Sunset Fire Hall. An array of games and activities throughout the day are led by the most energetic members of our staff.

Activities include: chess, lessons, puzzles, Wizard says, bug house, mirror, Fisher, Take Me, charades, basketball, eoccer, dodge ball and more. Each child will also receive a chess board that all his or her new friends can sign on the last day of camp. In addition, each child will receive a trophy and the new Chess Wizards T-shirt plus a folder containing all the puzzles they completed at camp.

Please ensure that your child arrives to camp with a lunch. All camps include snacks provided by Chess Wizards. At the end of the camp, all the students participate in a mini chess tournament. Class fee, $169.

Stumptown Cakes is offering a four-session class for adults. Students will learn the basics of creating a professional-looking and tasting cake at home. Students will be working on cake “dummies” in the first three classes and bringing their own cake and icing to fully decorate their cake for the fourth class.

Students will learn about tools and equipment, baking, layering, filling, crumb-coating, icing, piping of basic borders, writing and lettering and a few piped flowers. Supplies (cake boards and boxes) are available to purchase. Students will have a finished cake and keep their cake dummy for further practice. You can reuse the cake dummy in future classes for a $5 discount. The class will run from Aug. 26 to 30, 7 to 9 p.m. Exact location in West Linn will be provided at registration. Fee for class is $54

Join Parks & Recreation for our last Movie in the Park — “Men in Black” (rated PG-13) at Tanner Creek park on Friday, Aug. 23. Movies will start at dusk and families are welcomed into the parks to enjoy picnics, popcorn and movies. This event is professionally planned and managed by the West Linn Parks & Recreation Department. Thank you to Smile Linn Dental for sponsoring this event.

Drivers Education will be offered through a partnership with Oregon Drivers Training Institutue. Registration opened on Aug. 19 for classroom sessions Sept. 17 to Nov. 12, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.The class will meet at West Linn High School, room B104Behind the wheel lessons are scheduled outside of class time and will take longer to complete.Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Classes are ODOT-approved and a certificate of completion is issued if the student meets all requirements. The program consists of 33 hours of classroom instruction, six hours of driving and six hours of observations.

Seating is limited and pre-registration is required.The fee for a non-licensed driver, under 18, is $340. Here are some points to keep in mind:

n Permit number requried at time of registration.

n There is a mandatory parent meeting held the first class session.

n The above schedule is for classroom time only. All class sessions are mandatory.

n We recommend 10 hours of driving prior to behind-the-wheel lessons.

n Last day to register is Friday before class or when class is full.

n Bring a photocopy of the student’s permit to the first class.
