Horvath has talent to spare

by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - Marie Horvath is a talented lady, but dont tell her.

West Linn Adult Community Center stalwart Marie Horvath isn’t the kind of woman who likes being complimented or featured in the newspaper. It makes her cranky. But her talent and generosity are too substantial to keep notoriety at bay for long.

Thirty years ago, a Robinwood neighbor invited Horvath and about 20 others to her basement to learn how to paint. None of the invitees had painting skills, but the Robinwood neighbor said anyone can learn and was certain the group would enjoy being taught. It turned out she was right, at least as far as Horvath was concerned, and she’s been painting ever since.

Now she paints on Tuesdays at Brush & Pallet, a converted studio in Jennings Lodge. She and 25 fellow painters are the de facto property managers, and so they each pay only $20 per month to use the facility. They hold fundraisers to get money to fix the building up.

The painters take their inspiration for subjects from different sources: Some use photographs, some paint from memory, some paint from imagination.

Occasionally they hire nude models from PSU to sit for them. Once, while painting a nude, one of the painters had a heart attack — unrelated to the subject. When the fire and rescue team showed up to treat him and got a look at the model, one of them asked, “Just what do you ladies do in here?”

Marie’s paintings grace the walls of the WLACC with some regularity. But if you see one and like it, don’t compliment her. It will only make her cranky.

Here are the upcoming week’s activities. Call the WLACC at 503-557-4704 for specific times and possible fees. Also, all lunches listed below are subject to change but only for the better.
