Learn to cook Thai curry, dance or play

The West Linn Fall Recreation Activities brochure should arrive at your home soon if it has not already. This activity guide has plenty to offer for the entire family.

Join instructor Surja Tjahaja as he demystifies the secret to making authentic Thai curry paste from scratch.

Learn how to make green curry using exotic, fresh ingredients, pounded with a mortar and pestle. We will use curry paste to cook Chilean seabass (one of the finest tasting fish, often found in the market for $24 per pound or more) at the class with coconut curry that we will enjoy for our lunch with hot steaming red rice.

Class is Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Class fee is $30.

Dance classes presented by Miss Kathleen Van De Veere start over the next week. Dance classes include ballet, tap, jazz, hip -hop, musical theater and lyrical/contemporary. Classes are offered for all levels and ages. Class fees range from $47 to $57 per session based on number of weeks.

The YMCA partners with West Linn Parks and Recreation to offer Jump Rope Club (ages 6 to 12, 5 p.m.), Art of Destruction (ages 7 to 12, 5 p.m.), Lego Jr. (ages 4 to 6, 6 p.m.), Lego Engineering (ages 7 to 12, 6 p.m.) all starting Sept. 18 at Rosemont Ridge Middle School. Class fees are $67 per class.

Mini Hoopers registration is now open. Don’t miss this opportunity for your first-, second- or third-grader to play in this recreational basketball program during the months of November and December. Third-graders will play through February. Register at parks and recreation office or download the forms from the website.

Middle school basketball registration is also open. All interested players in sixth through eighth grades who live in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District boundary are welcome to participate.

The program offers a positive sports environment for players and provides the basic skills needed to play basketball. The recreation basketball season runs November through February. Practices are held midweek with games on Saturdays and some possibly midweek.

All practices will be located at local schools while games will be home and away with other communities. Registration fee is $100 and registration deadline is Oct. 11.

Join us at for the 2013 Haunted Trail in Mary S. Young State Park. The 2013 Haunted Trail will be held Oct. 25 and 26 from 7 to 10 p.m. We need your spooky ideas for the Haunted Trail scene contest. We’re looking for the most inspired, humorous, creepy and peculiar families, businesses, organizations and clubs to compete for cash prizes for the best Halloween scenes during the Haunted Trail event. Start your planning now. Proposals will be accepted until Sept. 27 with six scene finalists notified Oct. 4.

Cash awards will be presented to the top three scenes: $400 for first place, $250 for second place, $100 for third. This event is presented in cooperation with the West Linn Rotary Club.
