Ron McCallister takes ukulele leadership role at WLACC

When Chuck Lawson, founder and leader of the West Linn Adult Community Center’s Ukulele Strummers, decided to relocate to Southern California, he asked Ron McCallister to take over the group. Ron reluctantly agreed and Kate Kaake agreed to help, too.

Ron McCallister is an easy guy to like. He’s got a five-string uke, a twinkle in his eye, a good sense of humor and he’s not afraid to laugh at himself. In short, he’s the perfect ukulele group leader.

Ron came to the ukulele as a young man, but his interest eventually waned. It took triple bypass surgery, a lengthy recovery period on the couch and his wife’s suggestion that he dust off his old instrument to put him back in a ukulele frame of mind.

For the past year, Ron’s been learning the harmonica and he sometimes accompanies the uke group with it. The usual format for the jams has each participant choosing a song for the group to play. As the group tackles each number, there is as much laughter as music in the air.

Ukulele jams are held each Tuesday from 2 until 3:30 p.m. in the WLACC lunch room. Visitors are encouraged and all levels are welcome. There is no cost for attending. Instruments other than ukuleles are also welcome.

Here are the upcoming week’s activities. Call the center at 503-557-4704 for specific times and possible fees. Also, all lunches listed below are subject to change, but only for the better.
