Although the days are shorter and skies gloomy, the city of West Linn celebrates the approach of winter with a series of festive happenings.

If you’ve never explored Maddax Woods, make sure you find time between Saturday and Dec. 31 to experience the magic of the park lit and decorated to honor the former property owners, Virgil and Dorothy Maddax. The couple lived on the property and lovingly cared for the grounds and animals around their home for many years before donating it to the city for a public park. The Friends of Maddax Woods host a benefit sale 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Attendees are invited to enjoy live entertainment, free hot drinks and roast marshmallows around the fire pit. Bring your flashlight to search for animals in the woods and learn about the Maddax’s boat history. Fresh cultured trees with lights, wreaths, native plants, nature-related gifts and arts are available for purchase. The woods are lit daily from 4 to 9 p.m. Trails are accessible throughout the woods and to the viewing platform on the Willamette River. The park is located at 5785 River St. For more information, call Sally McLarty at 503-722-2137 or visit

For one day only, Saturday, the West Linn Adult Community Center becomes a bustling destination for shoppers seeking unique handcrafted items. The holiday bazaar is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Expect to find jewelry, kids clothing, woodworks, paintings, sweets from more than 25 different vendors.

A longtime tradition for many West Linn families is the annual holiday parade. The 2013 theme for the parade is “It’s a Wonderful Life West Linn — 100 Years.” The city of West Linn, our partner Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue and event sponsor Advantis Credit Union, all encourage you to participate in, or come watch, the parade on Dec. 14 beginning at 10 a.m. in the historic Willamette District.
