Annika Matthys had big plans for celebrating her 13th birthday. Rather than bring gifts for her, she invited her guests to visit the Oregon Dog Rescue webpage to learn what the nonprofit needed, then bring an item from the wish list to her party.

Her friends brought more than 40 items needed by ODR, including dog toys, dog food, leashes, collars, dog shampoos and cleaning supplies.

“We got our dog, Theo, from (Oregon Dog Rescue), and they really help out dogs by finding them new homes,” Annika said. “Also, they are a non-kill and they are a nonprofit, and I like to help them.”

Annika’s mother, Tarina Matthys, said the Lake Oswego Junior High seventh-grader trick-or-treated for Oregon Dog Rescue last Halloween and raised more than $70.
