Who's knocking at the door?

Protect yourself from unwanted solicitors

by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - Protect yourself from unwanted solicitors. The City of Lake Oswego has tips to keep you safe and alert.

Do you get a lot of solicitors? Is it difficult to determine if they are legitimate? The Lake Oswego Adult Community Center wants seniors to know that the city requires businesses without a location in Lake Oswego to apply for a license and wear an identification card.

But identification cards could be faked. How do you protect yourself?

One step you can take is to never write a check or give solicitors any form of money while they are at the door. You can take their information, do some research and then reach out to them if you are still interested. If they tell you the price will go up if you don’t give them money today that is a sign to walk away.

Most solicitors are probably legitimate, and we don’t want one bad egg to ruin it for everyone but you need to protect yourself. Some criminals pose as solicitors to case your home or to just guilt you out of money with a sad story.

We at the LOACC don’t want you to live scared, but we do want to make sure you are not taken advantage of.

Through the city website you can get more details and read the municipal code. Visit ci.oswego.or.us/finance/door-door-solicitation.
