All the world's a stage at the WLACC

Thursday afternoon at the West Linn Adult Community Center is generally not a busy time. The bridge players are shuffling and dealing as usual, but most other events happened earlier in the day.

So it was something of a surprise to see the parking lot full on the last Thursday afternoon in May. The crowd was occasioned by a classroom presentation of the Antique Roadshow Players, our new drama group, under the direction of Pat Amore Hand.

The five thespians, Pat Styles, Jack Heiter, Alice Johansson, Warren Guest and Carol Shively, demonstrated their skills to the appreciative audience for about an hour, after which a small reception of snacks and conversation ensued.

The group presented a number of different skits using an assortment of prompts from Pat Hand. In the first, she assigned emotions to each character (impatient, overly friendly, rude, etc.) and set the scene at a bus stop. The characters are free to improvise from there, and the results are often surprising and funny.

Then Hand assigned parts from a scripted scene from the musical “Gypsy” and from “The Odd Couple.”

The final performance involved all five performers in a “Laugh-In” type scene where one character would explain something good that had recently happened followed by an unexpectedly bad outcome. Brief musical interludes separated the scenes.

The audience clearly enjoyed the performance, but it was apparent that the performers had the most fun. If you would like to join this group, which meets at 1 p.m. on Thursdays, call the WLACC for details. West Linn Adult Community Center is at 1180 Rosemont Road.
