Bishop will speak at Living Prophet Series

by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - Bishop John Shelby Spong will be the guest speaker at the Living Prophet Series held at New Thought Center for Spiritual Living on Sept. 10.

Bishop John Shelby Spong will be the honored speaker at New Thought Center for Spiritual Living’s (NTCSL) annual Living Prophet Series, which will be held Sept. 10.

Spong is the fourth speaker in NTCSL’s Living Prophet Series, which honors voices of courage, change and transformation.

“The purpose of the series is to bring powerful and inspiring speakers to this community who exemplify the spirit of a ‘living prophet,’” church representative Christine Ruddy said. Speakers are selected because their work represents a break from the status quo in their given field, their voice serves as a prophetic call to transcend and include, and they carry out this work with courage, compassion and a love for humanity that calls to a higher purpose.

Spong served as bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark, N.J., for 24 years before his retirement in 2001. He is acclaimed as a teaching bishop who makes contemporary theology accessible to the ordinary person, and he is considered a champion of an inclusive faith. He is a committed Christian who has spent a lifetime studying the Bible and whose life has been deeply shaped by it.

The Living Prophet Series is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sept. 10 at the church, 1040 C Ave., Lake Oswego. Tickets ($15 each) are available online at brownpapertickets.com.
