Keep learning with parks and rec classes

Continuous learning is important for personal growth — it keeps your mind sharp and skills fresh, develops more confidence, and grants you more options in work and life.

Whether you’re going back to school soon or haven’t tried that one thing you’ve always wanted to, now is a great time to explore new interests and meet new friends. Lake Oswego Parks and Recreation offers outstanding opportunities for you to continue to pursue your health, wellness and enrichment goals.

Try line dancing for free from 6 to 7 p.m. Sept. 5. Here’s your opportunity to check out the line dance program with instructor Holli. All abilities welcome; no partner necessary. Benefit from improved memory, coordination, confidence and muscular strength, plus enjoy great music while dancing. Pre-registration requested but drop-ins are welcome too. The class session runs Fridays Sept. 12 through Oct. 10.

Try Nia for free 8:45 to 9:55 a.m. Sept. 7 at the Lakewood Center for the Arts, 368 S. State St.; or 5:40 to 6:40 p.m. Sept. 9 at the West End Building, 4101 Kruse Way. Here’s your opportunity to check out the Love Your Body Workout — Nia, an exhilarating fitness and lifestyle practice combining martial arts, dance and healing arts. Improve flexibility, agility, mobility, balance and strength.

Class and drop-in sessions run on various mornings at the Lakewood Center and Tuesday evenings at the WEB.

Discover a new skill or activity

Intro to Guitar. This course is designed to teach all ages the basic fundamentals and techniques needed to play guitar in any style. Mondays, Sept. 8 to Oct. 13, 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. (ages 5-6) and 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. (ages 7-12), $101. Adult class begins Sept. 17.

Kids’ Tap Dance. Learn shuffles, flaps, buffaloes, pull backs, time steps, flexibility, sequences, dances, terminology, and more all while building self confidence in a fun environment. Ages 6-9, 5 to 5:50 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 11 to Oct. 23, $50.

Jazz Dance for Kids. Learn proper jazz turns, walks, kicks, pivots, flexibility, sequences, dances, terminology and more all while building self-confidence in a fun environment. Ages 6-9, 6 to 6:50 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 11 to Oct. 23, $50.

Mixed Media for Kids. Art making experiences using watercolor, acrylics, charcoal, pastel, collage and ordinary objects. Ages 7-12, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturdays, Sept. 13 to Oct. 11, $46 for first child, $38 for additional siblings.

Belly Dance Basics. Learn basic belly dance torso movement, steps and rhythms. This fun workout is appropriate for all ages and body types. Age 12 and older, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 8 to Oct. 27, $51.

Beginning French. Class covers basic conversation, such as introductions, talking about food, family, telling time and actions, plus reading, listening and writing skills. Age 16 and older, 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 9 to Nov. 4, $138.
