Learn to overcome fears

Fear can prevent people from doing what they want, and anxiety can keep people from trying something new.

A workshop designed to teach skills to calm nerves and expand comfort zones is being offered from 10 a.m.-noon June 3 at the Northwest Counseling Center, 8383 N.E. Sandy Blvd., Suite 205 in Portland. Cost for the workshop is $30.

Honorary Knighting Ceremony planned

The Royal Rosarians continue their annual tradition of knighting successful and well deserving individuals who have made significant contributions to society.

The ceremony will take place at 9:30 a.m. June 9 in the Washington Park Amphitheater, 410 S.W. Kingston Ave., Portland. The event is free and open to the public.

Now in its 105th year, the Honorary Knighting Ceremony will be presided over by Prime Minister James Stahl and the 2016 Queen of Rosaria, Grace Ramstad from Centennial High School.

Since the event began, thousands of civic leaders have been recognized. The 2017 Rose Festival Court Princesses also will attend the event.

Since 1912, the Royal Rosarians, a nonprofit organization, has provided the official greeters and ambassadors of goodwill for the City of Portland.

Learn how to prepare for 'the Big One'

Jan Castle, co-chairwoman of PrepLo, a group made up of the chairs of Lake Oswego's neighborhood associations, will present "Building a Resilient Lake Oswego and How to Prepare for the Big One" June 10 at Lake Oswego LDS Meetinghouse.

The program will outline the impact predicted for Lake Oswego for a major earthquake along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, a fault line spanning from Northern California's Cape Mendocino up to British Columbia's Vancouver Island. There will also be details on the infrastructure improvements that the City of Lake Oswego is making. Attendees can learn how to prepare their own homes and neighborhoods to be ready for the major earthquake that scientists say has a 30 percent chance of occurring within the next five decades. The presentation will take place from 6-7:30 p.m. June 10 at Lake Oswego LDS Meetinghouse, 14903 Westlake Drive in Lake Oswego.

PrepLO's mission is to spread emergency preparedness into the neighborhoods and to the household level.

Castle is the chair of the McVey-South Shore Neighborhood Association and co-founder of the Lake Oswego Sustainability Network.
