Lake Oswego Women's Coalition invites all to attend its first luncheon program of the year, to be held Sept. 20 at The Stafford in Lake Oswego.

Lake Oswego Women's Coalition resumes its monthly series of luncheon programs Sept. 20, with "The Bird Man," Noah Stryker.

In 2015, Stryker became the first person to see more than half of the planet's bird species in one yearlong, around-the-world birding adventure. He endured blood-sucking leeches, fevers, sleep deprivation, airline errors, car breakdowns, mudslides and torrential floods. He also skirted war zones, but he says he "had the time of his life."

With only one pack on his back, Strycker visited seven continents, to record seeing more than 6,000 species, with the support of local birders. A self-professed "bird nerd," he will share his experience in "Birding Without Borders: An Epic World Big Year," to be released Oct. 10. Strycker will share information from the new book during his presentation.

Strycker is the associate editor of Birding magazine. He is also the author of "Among Penguins," which chronicles a field season working with Adélie penguins in Antarctica, and he wrote "The Thing with Feathers," which celebrates the paralleling behaviors of birds and humans. He is based in Oregon, where his backyard has hosted more than 100 species of birds. He also is a regular contributor of photography and articles to all major bird magazines and other media.

Strycker will have copies of "The Thing with Feathers" available for purchase and signing at the event.

Lake Oswego Women's Coalition is a networking group for women of all ages and walks of life. There is no committee work or commitment other than attending the once-a-month luncheon meeting.

"This is a group of interesting women who get together once a month to visit, eat a nice lunch and enjoy an interesting program," says Barby Smith, who leads the organization.

LOWC meets from 11:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month, September through May at The Stafford, 1235 Overlook Drive in Lake Oswego. Cost for the luncheon is $18 for members, $22 for non-members. Membership is $20 annually. Reservations can be made by calling 503-747-2573.
