Special events are planned locally to celebrate the life and works of civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The events are free and open to all.

  • Mary's Woods will host the fourth-annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13, in the Chapel of the Holy Names. U.S. Rep. Terri A. Sewell of Alabama will talk about King's life and legacy.

Sewell has been a passionate champion for recognizing and honoring the sacrifices of the freedom fighters who served as powerful agents of change during the civil rights movement. Her first piece of successful legislation recognized the four young girls who lost their lives during the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in 1963. The Congressional Gold Medal bill passed unanimously in both houses of Congress and was signed into law by President Barack Obama on May 24, 2013.

Portland's Northwest Freedom Singers will accompany Sewell with a performance of inspirational songs and gospel hymns.

"I look forward to our community coming together to celebrate Dr. King's impact on our nation," said Diane Hood, Mary's Woods CEO. "We are very honored to host the distinguished Congresswoman Sewell on this important day, which not only remembers the past and the achievements of King and the civil rights movement of the 1960s, but also fights for the future."

The event is free and open to all.

Sewell, who is in her fourth term representing Alabama's 7th District, was one of the first women elected to Congress from Alabama and the first black woman to serve in the Alabama congressional delegation. She will also speak at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 12, at Temple Beth Israel in Portland. Admission is free and open to all.

  • The Baha'is of Lake Oswego, Beit Haverim and Lake Oswego United Church of Christ will host a celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.'s life at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 14, at LOUCC, 1000 Country Club Road in Lake Oswego.

"The program will include music, both performed and some in which those in attendance can participate," said Martha Yazhari, who is helping organize the event. "We try to have most of the participants be children and youth. Selected quotes from speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr. are included, as well as an audio portion of King's well-known 'I Have a Dream' speech." All are invited to attend.
