WL's Beth Bolden publishes book
Romantic comedy about fictional baseball team is first of trilogy
Beth Bolden of West Linn has three loves: reading, writing and the Boston Red Sox. With those three passions, it makes sense that her first novel should be about baseball. Released this week is The Lucky Charm, a romantic comedy about the Portland Pioneers, a fictional baseball team.
The Lucky Charm is about a baseball expansion team, Bolden said. And actually about the second baseman and the sideline reporter, who doesnt have a lot of broadcast journalism experience and doesnt know baseball shes a bit of a fish out of water.
Izzy Dalton, the sideline reporter, has to convince her boss that shes competent, learn what she can about baseball and stay away from the second baseman, Jack Bennett, who has a wicked sense of humor and even more wickeder blue eyes. The story begins with Izzy thinking it will be a snap, but the season is long, and Jack is more irresistible than she counted on.
Jack is focused on winning baseball games and couldnt be less interested in romance, but somehow Izzy becomes the key to his success.
A writer for all her life, Bolden graduated from Pacific University with a degree in English. She said The Lucky Charm took about two years to write but went more quickly after she quit her job with an accounting firm. She self-published the book, so she could control more of the details of publishing.
The first person Bolden had read her book was her mother, who was a really tough critic and helped her smooth out transitions in the story. Then Bolden hired a content editor who returned the book with six pages of suggested changes.
The last couple of days Ive been overthinking it, she said. Ive asked friends if I should change this or that and they tell me dont worry about it. Its time to print it.
The Lucky Charm is available as an e-book from Barnes and Noble and Amazon.com for $3.99. It can be purchased in print form from CreateSpace.com.
Bolden said The Lucky Charm is the first of a trilogy she has mentally outlined, and she is already working on the second book.
A secondary character (in book one) is the main character of book two, she said.
Bolden said she writes every day and reads everything that interests her.
Its been my lifelong dream to be an author, she said. I was scared to do it, but I feel good about the book.
