Moxie Dance Theatre, (MDT) a pre-professional contemporary ballet school located in West Linn, will be auditioning for male and female dancers ages 16 to 25 Aug. 9 for its two-year company training program. At the end of the training program, 10 to 12 dancers will be selected and offered a paid 32-week performing contract and will become Oregon’s professional Contemporary Ballet Company.

To run from Aug. 25 through June 7, 2016, the rigorous company training program will prepare dancers to work with seasoned faculty, guest artists and choreographers, while refining their technical prowess and artistic maturity in preparation for a professional performing contract.

“We are thrilled to have the ability to mold and train a group of talented young dancers,” Artistic Director Gina Candland said. “Comradery and performing experience are key to creating a cohesive company of dancers.”

The company will make its debut 2016-17 performance season at the Joyce Theatre in New York City, as well as locally in Portland.

Moxie Dance Theatre is the creation of the husband and wife team of Marshall and Gina Candland, transplants from the San Francisco Bay area, who have both had successful careers in the arts.

Marshall has enjoyed a long career as a technical director for George Lucas’ Industrial Light & Magic, a motion picture visual effects company, and has created special effects and simulated lighting environments for more than 25 blockbuster films including “Transformers,” “Avatar,” and “Iron Man.” He currently creates and designs all the artwork, signage and graphics for MDT.

Gina has trained with ballet legend Benjamin Harkavy, San Francisco Ballet School and The Alvin Alley two-year training program. Her performing career has spanned from Broadway to ballet as a dancer in “Billy Joel” and Twyla Tharp’s “Movin’ Out” on Broadway, and as a guest soloist for Pennsylvania Ballet and New Jersey Ballet. Her performing lead her to a career of teaching proper ballet technique, methods for injury prevention and formulation of BioDynamic Technique, a method of training that teaches sound classical foundation by utilizing Gyrokenisis, plyometrics, isometrics and resistance stretching.

Dancers in the company training program will train daily in BioDynamic Technique, ballet, pointe, modern, contemporary and maintain an active rehearsal schedule for two annual seasonal contemporary ballets and two annual company review performances.

Candland has handpicked MDT’s faculty, including its most recent addition, former San Francisco Ballet and Oregon Ballet Theater veteran Kathi Martuza.
