Cross country: McCoy finishes 23rd

by: CORY MIMMS - Cheyenne McCoy, right, closing in on the finish at the State Championships on Saturday, Nov. 2, in Eugene.Viking Cheyenne McCoy took 23rd at the cross country State Championships on Saturday. With 108 girls running in the 3A/2A/1A division, McCoy had plenty of competition. She ran the 5K course, which wound through Lane Community College, in 21:11.

McCoy’s best 5K record is 20:48.7, which she ran at the PacWest meet on Oct. 17. She took third at that meet. Though she didn’t top her personal 5K record on this course, she was still excited to have run at the State Championship.

“There’s no excuse, but I’m happy with the race,” she said.

Coach Mark Shelton was also happy to have a runner from Colton High School at state. If they had a full team, he said, they could have been a real competitor in the division. “We just need to send her (McCoy) out to recruit,” he said.

McCoy is only a junior, and she plans to run again next year.
