Vest Racing ranked fourth

Vest Racing wraps up their season next month at the Henderson 250 on Dec. 6-8.

The race team recently took eighth in their class at the Blue Water Desert Challenge as well, and they’re ranked fourth in points for the season overall.

Driver Troy Vest is happy with the season so far. “The first year was a learning curve,” he said, “and the goal was to finish in the top ten. We’ve exceeded that.”

He hit a few snags in the Blue Water Desert Challenge. On day one, a flat tire cost him three positions. On day two, the truck’s hood blew off three miles into the course, and that slowed them down quite a bit.

It caused overheating issues, Vest said. But that wasn’t the only problem. Thirteen miles from the finish, Vest hit a stretch of gravel. Rocks flew into the engine compartment and cab, and one of the rocks hit the crank sensor. “We lost a few positions on that,” Vest said.

Vest’s truck is still in Las Vegas. It’s getting some new shocks installed and prepped for the final race.

In between the Best in the Desert races, Vest and his son, Ben, have been traveling to short courses, where Ben has been competing. “We’ve been busy,” Vest said. “I’m thinking he’s at [a competitive] level.”

A talented driver without the proper truck won’t get far though.

“Short course tracks are like a freeway compared to the desert,” Vest said.

Vest Racing may put a budget together to get Ben a pro-lite truck, Vest said. The pro-lite trucks are better suited for short courses than the heavier pro truck Vest races in desert courses.
