Basketball: Country Christian's girls fall short while boys win

Girls

Country Christian’s girls team came up just short against Kennedy as the Trojans beat the Cougars 34-30 in a nail biter.

Kennedy came out early and “jumped all over us,” Coach Russell Halverson said. “We looked a little shell shocked.”

The Cougars were plagued by early turnovers as the Trojans jumped out to an early 10-2 lead.

“It’s not the team I’ve seen all summer, and it’s not the team we are,” Halverson said.

Once the butterflies settled, the Cougar girls began properly running their press breaks and got back within striking distance, trailing 10-8 to end the first quarter.

Country Christian struggled to sink mid range shots. “[The girls] are still trying to get comfortable,” Halverson said. “They rushed their shots.”

At the half, they trailed by four. “We came out pounding in the paint in the third,” Halverson said.

Going into the game, Halverson’s biggest concern was rebounding, as the Cougars lost two of their best rebounders to graduation. Halverson’s fears about rebounding were put to rest though, as the team pulled in 41 boards.

“Brittnea Corless rebounded like a beast,” Halverson said. Corless managed to nab nine rebounds. She was followed by Audrey Barden, who had seven rebounds and led the team in scoring with nine points.

In the fourth quarter, the game was all tied up, and it came down to the wire. With a minute and half left, the Cougars took a two-point edge. Country Christian couldn’t hold the lead though, as Kennedy outplayed them down the stretch for the win.

The game was seemingly won and lost at the free throw line. Kennedy hit 14 of 27 free throws, while the Cougars made only 10 of 32.

“It was one of the worst free throw shooting games I’ve seen,” Halverson said. “Free throw percentage is huge. That’s the difference between winning and losing right there.”

Overall, the game provided “a good measuring stick,” Halverson said. “We have a lot to work on, but I’m generally pleased with what I saw.”
