Girls basketball: Colton takes two close wins

Vikings beat both Estacada and Scio by one point.

Madison Davis and Jessica Parker got the win for the Colton Vikings girls basketball team in the final seconds of play on Monday, Dec. 16. The Vikings beat the Estacada Rangers 60-59 in a fast-paced preseason game.

“So it was a pretty intense game,” Coach Kyle Gilstad said. “It came down to the wire.”

With around one minute left on the clock, the Vikings were down by three. They got the ball in Paige Lindstrom’s hands, and she scored on a layup, leaving the Vikings down by one point.

With four seconds left, the Vikings got the ball under their basket.

“Sophomore point guard Jessica Parker made a perfect pass to senior Madison Davis, who finished the layup on one of Estacada's best defenders,” Gilstad said. “It was a fast-paced, high-energy, high-scoring game with full-court press being applied by both teams. It was a really big win for us against a talented Estacada team. We play a similar style with press and a fast-paced offense, so it was a really fun game to play, watch and coach.”

“[Parker] did an amazing job pushing the ball for us,” Gilstad said. “Mikaela Shelton played stellar defense on Estacada's point guards all night … The surprise of the night was sophomore center Tia Wheeler, who came off the bench to anchor the post defense.”

“It was a huge win for the girls and for this program, it was definitely a team victory,” Gilstad said. “The girls played their hearts out and never gave up.”

While the Vikings were playing their hearts out on the court, the fans were adding their own energy to the game.

“The crowd was also a huge support,” Gilstad said. “They were loud and excited and our girls really fed off their energy.

“The girls have been learning a lot of new things and are still in the process of becoming comfortable with the changes,” Gilstad said. “But they are really working hard and improving each game. This was one of our best performances this far, but we still have a long way to go. The girls are hungry for a post season, and we know that this was just the first step in that direction. It's a long season, and we want to be at our best when February rolls around.”

The Vikings followed the win over Estacada with another one-point win in their first game of the Warrior Classic, in Amity, on Friday. They beat Scio 50-49.

Colton lost 57-48 the following day to Amity.
