Wrestling: Benthin optimistic about rest of season

The Colton Vikings wrestling team headed to Willamina on Jan. 4, after a lull on the mats over Christmas break.

“It was kind of light during Christmas break,” Coach Kerry Benthin said. Even though the team was coming off holiday down time, Benthin said they did pretty good in the tournament.

Tony Hayes took second in the 152-pound class, Nicholas Cantelon took fourth in the 170 class, Cheyenne McCoy took sixth in the 113 class, and Nick Finch took sixth in the 220 class.

The team has suffered one major loss. Charlie Gilpin is out for the rest of the season after breaking his leg during practice.

“We’re adjusting,” Benthin said. “Charlie is a huge loss. We don’t have a lot of kids anyway, so it really hurts. But other kids are coming along and getting better and better. They’re winning matches and getting good competition.”

Despite the downtime and a few injuries, Benthin said the rest of the season looks good.

The team wrestles next on Saturday, Jan. 11, at Santiam Christian.
