Colton held the lead the entire game, taking the win 45-24.

The Cougars took possession on the tip, but the Vikings quickly turned the tables. Sophomore Kailee White put the first points on the board, cashing in for a three pointer. Junior Tavia Boll followed up with a two pointer that put the Vikings in a 5-0 lead.

The Vikings then went on a string of steals, picking off sloppy passes that sent Gervais into real deficit.

Junior Madison Davis sank a two pointer, after snagging a rebound from a missed shot from White. After that, senior Paige Lindstrom landed a two-point basket of her own that put the Vikings up 11-0.

Gervais got their first points of the game off a foul shot, which they followed with a two-point basket.

However, Lindstrom stretched the Vikings’ lead back to 11 points, sinking a three-point basket that ended the first quarter 14-3.

It was a fast and physical first period. While Gervais’s players were aggressive, they weren’t coordinated enough as a team to overcome Colton. The Cougars turned the ball over multiple times at mid-court, giving the Vikings many chances to rack up points.

The Vikings didn’t stop picking off the Cougars’ passes in the second either. Davis opened the quarter with a steal and a pass to Mikaela Shelton, who sank a two pointer.

Two minutes into the second, a tangle of Vikings and Cougars fell to the court. The play sent Gervais’s Caitlin Davidson to the bench holding her head.

The Vikings didn’t let up though. Lindstrom nabbed a steal and passed to sophomore Caitlyn Weinberger, who took the shot but missed. Shelton was there on the rebound though and put the ball back up for two points.

Next, Shelton grabbed a steal at half court and rushed down for the layup with only one Cougar on her tail.

With the score sitting at 20-5, Vikings, the Cougars were in trouble. Gervais put six points on the board in the final minutes of the second quarter, the Vikings nabbed four more, taking the score to 24-11 at the half.

Gervais’s Jelayna Bastidas opened the third-quarter scoring with a two-point basket. The Cougars’ offensive game cleaned up quite a bit in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Vikings’ defense.

The fourth quarter opened 32-15. Both teams got early chances for points but the ball didn’t drop.

Davis broke the lull in scoring for the Vikings, nabbing two points from under the basket. Gervais struck back with a couple of blows that Weinberger responded to. She sandwiched the Cougars’ baskets with three baskets of her own.

It was a good way to open league play for the Vikings, who dip back into non-league play Thursday, Jan. 9, versus Damascus Christian.
